This prealgebra text, based on the AMATYC Crossroads standards, motivates college math students to develop mathematical literacy and a solid foundation for future study in mathematics and other disciplines. This first book of a three-book series presents mathematical concepts and skills through relevant activities derived from real-life situations. These activities are meaningful to students because they illustrate how mathematics arises naturally from real-world situations and problems. Mathematics in Action is based on the assumption that students learn mathematics best by doing mathematics in a meaningful context. Students take an active role in their own learning by working in groups, thereby developing communication skills, a sense of independence, and a “can-do” attitude about mathematics. Appropriate technology is integrated throughout the book so that students learn to interpret real-life data numerically, symbolically, and graphically. Regardless of their level of preparation for the course, students can use this text to increase their knowledge of mathematics, their problem-solving skills, and their overall confidence in their ability to learn.
Students are encouraged to view the material as an interrelated collection of arithmetic, geometry, and fundamental algebra concepts and skills needed for future mathematics development. Each chapter is built upon real-world activities. Within each activity, mathematical objectives are noted, exposition of concepts and skills are highlighted, and several modeling examples are included. Following each activity, there is a summary box featuring the important concepts and skills arising out of the activity.
- Each chapter is broken into thematic clusters, and each cluster is broken down into activities that cover specific concepts and skills. To complete an activity, students write directly in their books, answering questions, completing tables, and manipulating real information to derive mathematical understanding. The variety of activities within each cluster allows instructors to customize the text to fit the needs and interests of their students.
- Lab Activities are in-class group exercises included throughout the text. They provide intriguing, real-data applications that help students integrate and apply the mathematical concepts they have learned and solidify their comprehension of the material in class.
- Project Activities are out-of-class projects included throughout the text that give students the opportunity to practice the skills and concepts they have learned, either independently or in groups. The result is better comprehension and greater independence and confidence.
- What Have I Learned? review exercises occur at the end of each cluster, requiring students to reflect on recently presented concepts. This feature also prepares students for upcoming material by helping them develop a strong foundation for understanding.
- How Can I Practice? exercises, also at the end of each cluster, are an important self-assessment tool. They show students how to apply recently covered concepts, and give students a chance to practice key skills.
- Gateway Review exercises conclude each chapter. These exercises help students assess their understanding of the chapter concepts and then synthesize those concepts with material from previous chapters.
- Summary Boxes of the main concepts appear at the end of each activity to help students recognize critical topics and gel the concepts.
